Over the past 40 years, cytogenetics has
become the gold standard for chromosome analysis in clinical and research
laboratories. Giemsa and other types of chromosome banding techniques are
used to definitively diagnose inherited and acquired genetic disorders.
Molecular cytogenetics, a relatively recent development, permits detection of
chromosome abnormalities at single or multigene resolution.
